Rail

Historically, we didn't do much on rail, leaving that to our colleagues in Campaign for Better Transport and Railfuture. The latter has quite a number of active local rail groups, so in the first instance we would suggest looking for your local rail group or contacting Railfuture for help and advice.

However, more recently we have become more involved in promoting rail alternatives to road building, and we have been actively campaigning on rail freight:

Essex-Kent Superlinks

We commissioned Jonathan Roberts to look at high capacity alternatives to a road based Lower Thames Crossing. He produced his report in February 2025 which found there were substantial opportunities for generating cross-river rail travel in the Dartford area, and for shifting substantial volumes of freight to rail. This would relieve pressure on the Dartford Crossings.

Based on his report we produced our summary document Essex-Kent Superlinks and have been working with ASLEF, the train drivers union, to promote sustainable rail links across the Thames. We wrote this joint article in LabourList about the Lower Thames Crossing and the possible alternatives.

Connecting South West England: in place of A303/A358 widening

Working with the Stonehenge Alliance, we commissioned Greengauge21 to produce an alternative approach to improving connectivity to the South West. The report came up with a fairly modest set of proposals, acknowledging the fiscal constraints the government was facing. It focussed on upgrading the Salisbury to Exeter line, along with bus, coach and active travel improvements.
